ZOOMINAR: Tips for Engaging a Virtual Audience
Friday, November 6, 2020, at 2:00pm Eastern
NASJE’s Education and Curriculum Committee, is excited to offer a November Zoominar! The event will be held Friday, November 6, 2020, @ 2:00 Eastern, 1:00 Central, 12:00 Mountain, 11:00 Pacific.
For this Zoominar, Juli Edwards-McDaniel and Allison Gallo will host a discussion on the topic of “Is There Anybody Out There?: Tips for Engaging a Virtual Audience”.
The cancellation of live events has meant a marked increase in remote meetings and trainings. COVID has rushed us all into being “amateur experts”! Julia and Allison will share the lessons they have learned in the trenches of conducting virtually learning opportunities.
Attendees will be able to ask questions and share their own experiences as well. So if you have any tips to share or questions you’d like to ask, please bring those with you! The goal is for everyone to come away with some tips and tricks to encourage learner engagement for virtual programs.
We encourage all members to come and share the insights 2020 has given them on this learning format. If you have any questions, please contact Juli Edwards-McDaniel and Rebecca Glisan.
Joining information for this meeting is posted in the Member Area of the NASJE website. A recording of the meeting will also be posted there when available.

SJI Webinar to Explain Funding Toolkit for State Courts
Webinar Date & Time: April 10, 2020, at 1:00pm ET
The State Justice Institute’s mission is to improve the quality of justice in state courts and foster innovative, efficient solutions for common issues faced by all courts. SJI recognizes that funding plays an important role in fostering innovation. In recognition that many courts are unfamiliar with these funding opportunities and how these resources can be leveraged, SJI is launching a Funding Toolkit for State Courts and Justice System Partners in the coming weeks.
On April 10, 2020, at 1:00pm ET, SJI is hosting its inaugural webinar to introduce the toolkit and technical assistance that will be available for state courts, as well as highlight some current federal funding opportunities. The toolkit and virtual technical assistance will be developed and delivered in the coming 12 months.
SJI acknowledges the value of supporting not only the state courts but also their justice partners. As such, many of the resources in the toolkit will be relevant to your constituency. SJI would appreciate your assistance in spreading the word to practitioners in the field. See the flyer with links to register for the webinar and to sign-up for the mailing list.
Additional information regarding the State Justice Institute is accessible at sji.gov. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Unpacking Dr. Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility – A NASJE Webinar
NASJE’s Diversity, Fairness, and Access Committee invites you to join a them on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at 1:00pm Eastern for a webinar on the work of Dr. Robin DiAngelo.
Talking to the majority social group about racism is often fraught with hostility, guilt, and shame. Most educators from a majority social group who teach fairness have “never had to bear witness to the pain of racism experienced by people of color” according to Dr. Robin DiAngelo.
During this webinar, we will examine the work of Dr. DiAngelo on dealing with the defensiveness and related reactions and moves by majority persons that appear in discussions of racial issues and racism and that hinder meaningful cross-racial dialogue.
After this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Identify the misconception of racism;
- Recognize how privilege can contribute to the oppression of others;
- Manage defensiveness, denial, and deflection in fairness education; and,
- Mindfully manage defensiveness, denial, and deflection in yourself.

NJC and JSI Release Science Bench Book for Judges, Offer Webcasts
Judges are the guardians of our system of justice, but forensic developments in the last 50 years have made their jobs significantly harder. However, judges do not need to become scientists in order to make appropriate evidentiary decisions about scientific evidence. Rather, they need to have a detailed understanding of their role in admitting scientific evidence.
To achieve this, the National Judicial College and the Justice Speakers Institute are pleased to present a new online resource, Science Bench Book for Judges, to assist judges in making their rulings.
To help understand the book, several of the distinguished authors of the Bench Book will deliver eight webcasts in July, August, and September, with the first occurring on July 9. Thanks to funding from the State Justice Institute, the Bench Book and the webinars are offered at no cost to judges.
Please invite your judges to join the webinars. All webinars are at 12pm Pacific/3pm Eastern and will last 75 minutes. For more information, visit the NJC website.

Taking the Lead: Responding to Harassment in the Workplace
As you know, the #MeToo movement has generated a lot of attention on sexual harassment in the workplace. In addition, some high-profile disclosures regarding judges sexually harassing subordinates have increased attention to sexual harassment within organizations that support the educational needs of judges. Many of us have reviewed, revised, or revamped sexual harassment training efforts for judges and court staff. The conference in Austin features a session about what works and what does not work in terms of sexual harassment training. At the end of the day, none of us want to make the problem worse; we are trying to do what we can to make it better.
This webinar continues along the path of how to do sexual harassment training in a way that helps solve the problem. In this session, we will look at the intersection of race and sex, considering how training efforts may be missing some of the critical elements to make them effective.
Join our faculty, Dr. Anthony Simones, Director of Citizenship Education, Missouri Bar (moderator), Kimberly Carson, Judicial Education Specialist for the Iowa AOC, and Jennifer Juhler, Director of Education and Training for the Iowa AOC. Dr. Simones has graciously agreed to moderate a discussion of these issues with Kim and Jennifer who have considerable experience training on fairness issues and who spend a significant amount of time talking with each other about fairness issues in general, race and sex specifically.

Access Info now available for June 27 “Rethinking Learning Styles” Webinar
The Western Region is sponsoring a reprise of the 2016 annual conference session “Rethinking Learning Styles: Fact or Fiction” in webinar format on June 27 at 11:00a.m. Pacific Time. Mark your calendars now! This webinar describes newer research on learning styles that confronts long accepted educational theory on the topic and questions “what you always knew about teaching and learning.” Nancy Smith and Mary Ann Koory of the Western Region and Tony Simones of the Midwest Region will facilitate the discussion.
Visual, auditory, kinesthetic. Diverger, Converger, Assimilator, Accommodator. Which learning style best describes you? How do you know? As an educator, were you taught to adapt your teaching to the learning style(s) of your audience? Have you actually done so? Do you know if it was effective? Recent research purports to debunk the “myth” of learning styles. Researchers claim that the learning style-teaching style link is unproven and that instruments to measure learning styles are inaccurate. In this session, we’ll review the social science research about learning styles and discuss what we as educators should rethink — if anything — because of it.
During the session we will critically discuss learning style theory in light of the research; analyze the role of content and learning outcomes with respect to teaching techniques; and apply new norms for teaching to our repertoires.
This webinar will help members prepare for the upcoming conference session that will be a continuation of this discussion, and will feature Tesia Marshik of the University of Wisconsin Lacrosse. Dr. Marshik’s Tedx talk on the subject of rethinking learning styles was the catalyst behind the 2016 conference session and this webinar.
